Cannabis Strains for Migraine Relief

The worst pain imaginable. Nausea and sensitivity to light or noise are enough to make anyone wish they could avoid it altogether, but for some people, migraines come with a cost too high-ish for them not to handle their condition: medication that helps reduce the intensity of these symptoms when taken in conjunction with other treatments like over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen and Tylenol (which can also relieve discomfort from headaches).

Cannabis has been used for centuries to relieve pain, and it’s often considered the best treatment option for those with chronic headaches. Could cannabis help migraine sufferers find relief? With so many people who suffer from both conditions at once, there is potential that this could be true.

Cannabis and Migraines: The Latest Research

The effects of cannabis on migraine sufferers are something that’s been studied for years, but recently there were some encouraging results. In 2016 Leafly posted an article about one study in particular done at the University of Colorado which looked into how using marijuana could help with headaches and migraines.

The cannabis-migraine study involved 121 people. Here’s an overview of what the researchers found:

  • The average number of migraines dropped from a little over 10.4 per month to 4.6 per month
  • 40% of the participants claimed cannabis had a positive effect.
  • 8% claimed that medical cannabis helped prevent their migraine headaches.
  • 6% claimed that cannabis stopped their headaches.
  • 85% reported that they suffered fewer migraines each month while using cannabis.

However, some of these people who use cannabis to treat their migraines report that it doesn’t help them. 12% of participants said they experienced no change or got worse while 2% had an increase in migraine symptoms after using marijuana with a headache disorder.

The study found that cannabis is an effective option for people with migraines. While some believe the drug will never work, these findings are promising enough to at least consider trying out marijuana as a treatment in your next headache misfortune.

Which Strains Should You Use to Treat Migraines?

In our opinion here are the top 6 cannabis strains for migraine relief:

  1. Blue Dream

A classic Sativa-dominant hybrid, Blue Dream is a great choice for those seeking full-body relaxation. It offers uplifting cerebral effects and pain relief that will make your day go smoothly.

  1. Sour Diesel

If you’re looking for fast-acting pain relief and an invigorating, energizing effect then it sounds like Sour Diesel might be the strain to try. This Sativa is also best used in the daytime.

  1. White Widow

We’ve said in the past that White Widow goes great with playing video games. However, if you’re suffering from a powerful migraine headache, you need to shut down all the lights and noise in your house while on this hybrid. This Sativa-dominant hybrid will not only help with relaxation but it’s also stimulating.

  1. Girl Scout Cookies

Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) are one of the most popular hybrid strains ever. Patients who prefer GSC when they’re trying to treat severe pain but also want that deeply relaxing, euphoric effect have successfully found relief in many cases with this amazing strain.

  1. Northern Lights

Northern Light is a heavy Indica that will help you sleep and relieve your migraine, especially during the night.

  1. Pineapple Express

Pineapple Express is a strain of marijuana that can be helpful for people suffering from chronic pain or headaches. The taste elevates moods and relieves symptoms such as stomachaches to name just some. If your head feels like someone’s been sitting on it all day long then give this stuff a try!

Note: Before using cannabis to treat your migraines, be sure to consult with your doctor first.
